Your assignment is to write a 2-page policy brief that addresses a specific policy to address health equity. This can be based on proposed legislation or a program that you think the federal government should fund (even if a bill doesn’t exist to support it). The brief should be written from the perspective of an intern writing to their U.S. Senator, urging the bill be passed for the country. Outline (Do not have to include the headings, just the narrative described) 1. Issue: one - two sentences about the purpose of the policy and how you recommend the senator vote. 2. Background (several paragraphs): Provide facts about the proposed legislation/the program you think the federal government should fund and the problem that it addresses. a.What epidemiological data are available about the problem it addresses, e.g., what population is affected? Where? When (specific times of day, week, year)? Why – what causes the problem? b. What evidence supports the legislation, e.g., what are known risk and protective factors? What measures have shown this approach to be successful?c.Who else is in favor of it? If available, what do public opinion polls reflect in terms of support? 3. Discussion (several paragraphs): Provide an analysis about the proposed legislation/the program you think the federal government should fund. a.What do you view as the pros and cons? b. What is a specific alternative (related legislation or program)? What are the pros and cons of the alternative? c.Why does your preferred legislation/program have more merit than the alternative? 4. Conclusion or Summary: several sentences to one paragraph that capture the most compelling parts of your brief and encourage action. (Do not merely restate part of your brief.)
