Above are three images of the work Preserve Beauty by artist Anya Gallaccio (1991). This was an installation created from 800 REAL bright red flowers that were arranged into 4 large rectangles under glass. The first image depicts the installation at the beginning of its exhibition, while the 2nd and 3rd image show what happened to the installation as time passed in the gallery (the 3rd image is a close-up). The longer the flowers were in the gallery, the more they withered, decayed, and even started to smell putrid. Gallaccio often uses perishable materials in her artwork. Her intention is that the viewer will experience how her pieces interact with time. Please write a response to this piece of art. Include in your response the following: What is your initial reaction to this piece and why do you think you have that reaction? Why do you think Gallaccio used this specific type of flower? What do you think the content of the piece is? Why would Gallaccio want to use TIME in this way? What can the viewer get from a piece like this that they might not be able to experience in a painting, drawing, sculpture, etc?
